TUCSON, Ariz. – The Wisconsin Lutheran softball team grabbed leads in both of its games Tuesday, but couldn't hold on as it dropped game one 10-4 to Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) and game two 9-2 to Jamestown (N.D.) at Lincoln Park.
In the first game, the Warriors (2-4) faced an early 1-0 deficit after Alison Fiorucci hit a two-out run-scoring single for the Yellow Jackets (3-3) in the first inning. WLC countered with three runs in the second, as Abby Wichgers (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) delivered an RBI single and later scored when Brittney Blazich (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) reached on an error. Morgan O'Hanlon's (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) two-out RBI double handed the Warriors a 3-1 lead.
The Yellow Jackets used a six-run third inning to take the lead for good. Lauren Feciuch knocked a two-run double to right-center and Fiorucci followed with a run-scoring single. Sydney Kimball capped the inning with a bases-clearing, three-run double to give Baldwin Wallace a 7-3 advantage.
Nikki Peskura's RBI single pushed the lead to 8-3 in the fifth. WLC pulled a run back in the sixth when Blazich tripled and came home on O'Hanlon's groundout. The Yellow Jackets poured on two more runs in the sixth, scoring on an RBI single by Brittany Lightel and a fielder's choice grounder by DJ Rogers.
Blazich was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and O'Hanlon was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Kendra Thomas (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) surrendered seven runs, three earned, in four innings for the loss.
Fiorucci was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, while Kimball was 2-for-3 with three RBI for Baldwin Wallace. Erica Morgan (2-1) held WLC to four runs, two earned, and struck out seven in seven frames for the victory.
The Warriors surrendered a first-inning run again in their second game of the day against Jamestown (3-6), coming on Hanna Dunnigan's RBI single. WLC tied it in the second when Kaitlyn Robison (Andalusia, Ill./Rockridge) reached on a bunt single and Alicia Barbian (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) came around to score on a throwing error. Jinny Curtis' (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) run-scoring single in the third handed the Warriors a 2-1 lead.
The Jimmies pulled ahead in the bottom of the third, as Emily Newman hit an RBI double and Dunnigan followed with an RBI single. The third and final run of the inning came home on a groundout by Sydney Greenlund to give Jamestown a 4-2 lead.
Jamestown put the game away in the sixth, as three errors led to five unearned runs. Newman knocked a two-run single and Hattie Fullmer recorded an RBI single in the inning.
Curtis was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Warriors. Thomas (2-2) allowed nine runs, but just three were earned in six innings for the loss.
Newman was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Dunnigan was 3-for-4 with two RBI and also held WLC to two runs, one earned in six innings for the win to improve to 1-1.
Wisconsin Lutheran has an off day Wednesday and returns to action Thursday, when it meets Crown (Minn.) at 11 a.m. CST and Valley City State (N.D.) at 1 p.m. CST.
